Conditional short-circuit ratings with circuit-breakers. A new requirement covers conditional short-circuit ratings for disconnectors, switches, and switch-disconnectors protected by an upstream circuit-breaker. In many modern assemblies, a switch works in series with a circuit-breaker, and the switch's effective short-circuit rating can be boosted by the breaker's current-limiting behaviour — this update formally standardises how that higher "conditional" rating gets declared, giving designers clearer rules to work from.
Requirements for aluminium conductor connections. With aluminium conductors increasingly common in building wiring, the standard now includes specific tests and criteria for terminal connections to aluminium — addressing aluminium's particular thermal expansion and creep behaviour, which can otherwise lead to loose connections and overheating over time.
Device power loss measurement. As energy efficiency becomes a bigger concern in distribution design, the 4th Edition adds requirements for measuring power losses in switching devices, letting designers compare the energy efficiency of different products — which feeds directly into lower operating costs and less heat to manage inside switchgear assemblies.
What This Means in Practice
Understanding the distinction between these device types prevents basic misapplication — like using a plain disconnector to switch a motor load, which it was never designed to do. The 4th Edition changes carry direct practical implications: designers working with DC systems need switches tested and rated to the new critical load current requirements; panel builders can now formally use the conditional short-circuit rating to build more cost-effective, compact assemblies; and anyone specifying or connecting devices to aluminium conductors needs to confirm the terminal is actually certified for that application, to avoid failures down the line.
