Eaton's Emergency Lighting Fundamentals Guide was developed to walk building owners, consultants, and installers through exactly that process.

A Step-by-Step Approach to Design

The guide takes professionals through the full emergency lighting design process — starting with the fundamentals of the technology before moving into design and compliance considerations. It covers:

  • Why emergency lighting is needed, and its critical role during an evacuation
  • The available systems and products, including the different technologies, modes of operation, and product types on the market

  2. Building type and usage. What happens inside a building determines what category of lighting it needs — buildings are typically classified into low risk, high risk, and high risk+ task categories.
  3. Building scale and complexity. Larger or more complex buildings present tougher evacuation challenges and may call for advanced solutions such as adaptive signage.
  4. Lifecycle cost. The guide weighs total cost of ownership, balancing upfront capital expenditure against long-term operating costs.

Core Technologies and Terminology

Battery technologies. Commercial systems generally use one of two approaches. Self-contained systems have a battery built into each luminaire, which is quick to install and easy to extend. Central battery systems use a single power source to supply every luminaire, which simplifies maintenance and typically gives a longer battery life.

Modes of operation. Maintained luminaires stay on at all times as part of the general lighting, doubling as emergency lighting when needed. Non-maintained luminaires only switch on when the main supply fails — common in spaces where general lighting is only on while occupied.

Product types. The guide covers the main categories of hardware: safety luminaires (all-in-one units for anti-panic, escape route, or high-risk task lighting, from standard box shapes to discreet LED designs), exit/escape signs (illuminated pictograms, including the familiar green running man, pointing to a safe route), and beam lights (directional lighting aimed at specific high-risk points such as level changes or fire equipment).
