Introduction

Lighting is far more than illumination. It's a fundamental part of architecture, a tool for human wellbeing, and a major factor in a building's energy efficiency. Good light improves visual performance, shapes emotional response, and supports the body's biological rhythms. Zumtobel's Lighting Handbook is a concise but comprehensive reference for lighting designers, architects, engineers, and anyone else involved in creating effective lighting — covering everything from the basic physics of light through to advanced applications, quality criteria, and current standards. This article summarises its key concepts.

The Fundamentals of Light

Light is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum visible to the eye, with wavelengths between 380 and 780nm. During the day, the cones in our eyes let us see colour; at night, rods take over and we see only shades of grey. The retina also contains photosensitive ganglion cells that are sensitive to blue light and suppress the sleep hormone melatonin — so the right light at the right time helps regulate the circadian rhythm and healthy waking and sleeping behaviour.

Human Centric Lighting (HCL) captures the positive effect lighting has on health, wellbeing, and performance, through a triple effect: light for visual function (illuminating a task area to the relevant standard, glare-free and comfortable), light for emotional perception (enhancing architecture and creating scenes and effects), and light with biological effects (supporting circadian rhythm, whether stimulating or relaxing).

Basic lighting parameters include luminous flux (Φ), the total light emitted by a source, measured in lumens — divided by electrical power consumed, it gives luminous efficiency in lm/W, a measure of economic efficiency. Luminous intensity (I) is the light radiated in a specific direction, measured in candela and represented as a luminous intensity distribution curve. Illuminance (E) is the luminous flux landing on a surface, measured in lux, and is what standards typically specify for different tasks. Luminance (L) is the only one of these actually perceived by the eye — it describes brightness as seen, measured in cd/m².

Quality characteristics matter as much as raw quantity. The illuminance maintenance value (Ēm) is the level illuminance must not fall below in the task area over time. Uniformity (UO) should not fall below the ratio of minimum to average illuminance, to avoid uncomfortable brightness differences. Glare — whether direct, from unshielded luminaires, or reflected, off shiny surfaces — is assessed using the Unified Glare Rating (UGR), with limits varying by task: 16 or below for technical drawing, 19 for reading, writing, and computer work, 22 for craft and light industry, 25 for heavy industry, and 28 for railway platforms and foyers. Light colour (warm, intermediate, or cool white) and colour rendering — measured by the Colour Rendering Index, where Ra 100 is perfect, above 90 is very good, and above 80 is good — round out the main quality criteria.

Types of lighting break down into a few basic approaches. Direct lighting shines straight down onto the workplace from the ceiling — efficient for the work area, but needs glare control and can leave the ceiling looking dark. Indirect lighting bounces off the ceiling and walls first, giving a more diffuse, glare-free feel and making rooms look taller, at the cost of efficiency. Indirect/direct lighting combines both from suspended or freestanding luminaires, giving pleasant visuals, good contrast, and a solid balance of efficiency and quality. Mellow light combines the benefits of indirect/direct lighting in a single ceiling-mounted luminaire, aiming for a daylight-like, glare-free feel.

Standard Values for Indoor and Outdoor Lighting

The handbook provides extensive reference tables based on EN 12464-1 (indoor workplace lighting), EN 12464-2 (outdoor workplace lighting), and EN 12193 (sports facility lighting). A few representative indoor values (illuminance in lux, UGR limit, uniformity, and colour rendering index): writing, typing, and reading spaces call for 500 lux, UGR ≤19, uniformity ≥0.6, Ra ≥80; technical drawing needs 750 lux at a stricter UGR ≤16; classrooms need 300 lux; operating theatres need 1000 lux with Ra ≥90 for accurate colour perception; and retail sales areas need 300 lux while till areas need 500 lux. Outdoor values are far lower — pedestrian walkways need only 5 lux, regular vehicle traffic areas 20 lux, building sites around framework mounting 100 lux, and aircraft maintenance stands 200 lux, each with corresponding colour rendering requirements.

Lighting Applications

Offices and communication. Lighting needs change with the task, the person, and the time — a lighting management system built around actual need delivers the right light rather than a fixed compromise. Adding biologically effective components that complement daylight at the right times works with the body's internal clock rather than against it. The payoffs: standards compliance with task-appropriate illuminance, reduced glare, a stronger sense of architectural identity, circadian-friendly lighting that supports health, better performance and creativity, and clearer spatial orientation.

Education and science. Flexible room use and modern teaching media call for lighting that can shift quickly between scenes — a reduced level for projector presentations, higher vertical illuminance for blackboards and flip charts, and different setups for small-group versus teacher-led work, all achievable through intuitive preset controls. Daylight-based and presence-based control together maximise energy savings without compromising lighting quality.

Presentation and retail. Lighting scenes shift from task lighting at point-of-sale terminals to gentler colour tones in lounge areas, controlled through intuitive control points that keep comfort high and maintenance low. Static and dynamic lighting scenes can create strong emotional impact around merchandise, with Active Light approaches — built on Limbic Lighting principles — adapting dynamically to different target groups.

Health and care. Many healthcare facilities offer little or no daylight, which is an important stabiliser of the body's internal clock, and patients often spend little time outdoors. Artificial lighting has to compensate, with carefully adjusted colour and illuminance changes that support comfort and security, and age-appropriate scene concepts suited to healthcare settings. Emergency lighting, avoidance of heavy shadows and dark zones, and indirect light along ceilings and walls all contribute to a calmer, safer environment for patients and residents.

Technology and Energy Efficiency

Energy performance is tracked through the Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator (LENI) — actual lighting energy consumption in kWh per square metre per year, calculated per EN 15193. Consumption comes down through sensible lighting control, using daylight and presence detectors, intelligently scheduling hours of use, choosing energy-efficient lamps, matching luminaires and solutions to actual need, and maintaining constant light output over the system's lifetime rather than over-lighting when new.

The handbook also includes a dedicated chapter on emergency lighting, covering the requirements and design considerations for keeping people safe during a power failure.
